Our Story

The producers, Lee and Amy Wellard, would like to share with you the story of God's amazing grace and leading in bringing this CD into being.

The following facts concerning the making of this CD have been recorded that the discerning reader may see the great workings of our mighty God in preserving His work from the hands of the enemy, who sought so many times to destroy it. To our loving Saviour may all the glory go, to whom alone it belongs.

My wife and I had been married for only two weeks when we travelled from Australia to England to visit our family. It had been a dream of mine for years to visit the Reformation sites in Europe and I took advantage of every opportunity to do so. We were due to be in England for a few weeks prior to teaching at a medical missionary training program for 13 young american students in the Waldensian Valleys in Italy.

One of the topics that I was asked to talk about was Reformation history, so I eagerly took up the challenge and used the book "The Great Controversy" as a guide book to teach from.

I had purchased an international train pass while we were in England, as I planned to take a trip around Europe after the course finished. However, I didn't at the time realise that I would have the blessing of a friend to go with me. My co-teacher, Ryan Burnell, expessed his desire to also visit the sites featured in this inspiring book and so, after the course was over, we headed from the serene splendour of God's beautiful creation in the alps to the starkly contrasting city on seven hills - Rome.

Mysterious computer failure...The day before I left for Rome I woke up in the morning to burn a CD of all the photos that I had taken so far of England and the Waldensian Valleys. I went to turn the laptop on and the operating system wouldn't come on. It had never failed to come on in the past, but after many repeated attempts it became obvious that there was a serious problem.

I took the laptop into Torre Pellice in the Waldensian alps to a computer technician who ran a test on it. He then proceeded to tell me in a thick Italian accent that I had "no hard drive". My heart melted, I couldn't believe my ears, 'How is it possible?' I thought. I hadn't done anything wrong, hadn't used the internet so no viruses could have caused it. Little did I realise that I had just begun my own 'Great Controversy' with the enemy of Righteousness that would continue for the next few months. We were now engaged in a warfare. Little did we understand what great obstacles we were to face and what even greater victories our gracious Saviour was to give us.

With my computer not working I knew I had nowhere to store all the pictures that I was planning to take in Europe. Our one tangible wedding present we had bought in England was one of the best digital cameras on the market with a 128 meg of ram storage capacity. I feared that would barely be sufficient for the pictures of Rome, let alone the rest of Europe, yet I still felt compelled to go.

With a heavy heart I proceeded on my journey and met up with Ryan who had gone ahead of me to Rome. He was saddened and surprised about my laptop crash but fortunately he had a good digital camera himself so we decided not to double up on pictures and later combine them, thereby avoiding duplicates. That way I could save storage space on my camera.

We had arrived in Rome in the worst of the summer heat. With 100 degree temperatures and high humidity we back-packed around the city like soldiers training for the army, with food rations and just enough money for 2 nights accommodation.

We walked for miles through the streets and sites of Rome so much so that the soles in my shoes were deteriorating. What an incredible experience it was to stand before some of those amazing historical places and behold the antiquity of Christian heritage.

I had left Amy with friends back in the Waldensian alps and planned to return to see her after 3 days. Ryan, however, wanted to stay another 2 days, so we parted company and I went to the train station to take the long trip back home.

Amazing Providence...
I wanted to get to the train station early to get a good seat as I didn't want to have to stand up especially after all the walking we had done. I reached into my back pocket to get my ticket before I boarded, but alas to my despair I couldn't find it, my ticket was gone. Berating myelf for having foolishly put it in such an obvious place for thieves, I quickly pulled everything out of my back pack to check if it was there. It was nowhere to be found; it had gone in the pick-pocketing capital of the world.

My train drew away from the station without me. My international pass for 28 countries as well as my tickets to get back to Amy had gone, and there was nothing I could do. The tickets were non-refundable.

I only had about 10 Euros on me, enough to last one day. I had left some money with my wife in the Waldenses but didn't have enough money to call her. I knew my only hope was to find Ryan again, I didn't know a single other person in the whole of Rome. I proceeded to go back to the hotel where we had stayed the night before, but I had no assurance that Ryan was going to be there the following night, he could have headed for any of 100s of places in the city. I left a note there with the manager and proceeded to go to a corner store. I was struck with the thought that maybe there was some money in my Australian bank account. I tried the teller machine only to have it swallow up my card and the bank staff tell me to come back on monday to retrieve it. By this time it was friday lunchtime and the Sabbath was drawing on. Waiting until monday was not an option!

I sat on the corner of a street pondering over what I should do. I knew that I was in big trouble, it would take nothing short of a miracle from the Lord to help me. I proceeded to open my Bible and read some promises. Pausing at Psalm 107, everywhere I had looked talked about deliverance out of trouble. In spite of the seriousness of the situation, a quiet confidence entered my heart that the Lord would help me.

With only 10 Euros I knew I had to be extremely careful with their use. I still had a local train pass for the day and decided to catch one to go to the cheapest place I knew in town for water, which was an absolute necessity in the buring heat.

Just before I entered the shop the thought occurred to me, "What would be the odds of meeting Ryan in Rome?" Then a gentle impression came to my mind, "With God all things are possible." I passed it off and went in to get my water. As I was standing at the checkout I heard my name called, "Lee!". I looked behind me and there, standing in the same aisle, was my friend Ryan.

Amazed at seeing me again, Ryan told me that he had been impressed to go to this same shop for water himself, having no thought of seeng me. Our hearts rejoiced at the Lord's incredible leading and His undoubted presence with us. We stayed in Rome for another two days taking more pictures before making our way back to the Waldenses.

Ryan had purchased a ticket (before mine went missing) that would take him all around Europe and he didn't want to continue on his journey alone. My wife and I had very little money left and to buy another ticket would leave us practically pennyless. Being just newly married I didn't want to suggest this idea to Amy.

Stepping out...After two days back in the Waldenses, Ryan, my wife and myself were out walking when Amy suddenly said, "Why don't you just get another ticket?" I replied hesitantly saying that I was waiting for someone to give me some encouragement before stepping out in faith to spend our last dollar. Amy answered, "Well I am! Go and get one!" Ryan and I speedily headed off for the town, purchased another ticket and at six o'clock the next morning started out on our travels once again.

I must tell you something about my friend Ryan. Ryan is highly organized, always one step ahead, the kind of person who has the gift of finding the right places, the best food prices, the cheapest accomodation or the quickest route. He is always ready with a note pad and a laptop computer in his back pack. The Lord knew that I really needed a man like this to help me with this trip.

We only had a 12 day train pass and most of our time was spent travelling; we didn't waste a moment of time. With the bare essentials on our back and our cameras in our hands, we went from city to city, from weariness to exhaustion....Switzerland, Germany, Prague... We washed our clothes by hand and hung them up inside the trains, hoping that we would not be embarassed by someone else coming into our cabin. Thankfully, nobody did.

It was so good to see my wife again when we met up in Switzerland after those 12 intense days.

Providential leadings...
We flew back to England and I immediately started work on the project. Initially, I intended to make a CD of photographs with a few words about each one. However, a short trip to Wales lead to my fortuitous meeting with Adrian who blessed us with the Scala software program which would allow me to add much more to the project, things that I had never dreamed of.

Family help... Shortly after our arrival, my father who lives in Kent, generously loaned me his car, a belated wedding gift!, and in a matter of days I was able to drive over to Scotland to visit the sites of John Knox, Bristol for the Wesleys and Tyndale, Lutterworth for Wycliffe, and much more.

Anonymous donor ...About this time, we sent the hard drive of the 'crashed' laptop away by faith to a data retrieval specialist in England, knowing that, if they recovered the lost data and pictures, we did not have any money with which to pay them. Amazingly, not only was all the data successfully retrieved, including all the photos of the Waldensian Valleys, but that day we also received a gift of five hundred pounds from an anonymous donor - exactly the amount required to pay the bill!

The work begins...
The Lord had impressed us while we were staying in Italy to go back to Australia, and it wasn't until later that we understood why.

It was in Australia that we were able to have the much needed hour upon hour to compile this project. I was able to get employment doing cabinet making which supported us whilst working each evening and every spare moment on the computer.

Now, I know that computers aren't the most reliable things in the world, and one would have to expect that problems would occur along the way, however, in all the years I have been working with computers I've never had so many difficulties combined than all the problems that occured during the making of this project. The computer has done things that even the experts cannot explain.

Spiritual warfare...On countless occasions the program lost saved material and we had to start all over again from scratch. Amy had hours of typed information that had taken many hours to compile completely erased for no apparent reason. When she checked each of seven backups she found every one of them also erased. The computer screen died for days and then after prayer came back to life. Some important keys on the computer just stopped working for no reason, as did the power cable.

Prayer...I personally witnessed my computer doing strange things outside of my control whilst I was using it; it was as though someone else was operating it before my eyes. Only after much prayer this harassment stopped.

Three times the program came very close to being completely lost. We had constant problems with our CD burner and so we took the laptop to a computer store to get back-up discs burned. The store's DVD burner broke down in the process taking their top technician three days to get it fixed. I then took it to the local university in a desperate attempt to get it backed up on another computer, only to find that our computer's port wasn't working making the transfer of information impossible. When a church member kindly helped us to get a new desk top computer a few weeks later, it took an incredible 20 hours of work just to transfer everything from one computer to the other.

Patience...Getting towards the end of the project the spiritual opposition became so intense that I could not do one thing without the computer objecting. At times we were so exasperated, it seemed we would never get it finished. Many times when I simply did not know what to do the Lord would provide a solution and the work crawled forward to completion.

For many weeks, every last dollar was spent on some necessary piece of equipment or getting technical help in taking the work forward. Though the production cost has been in the thousands of dollars, we believe and pray that the global distribution of this CD and its potential to reach souls will more than repay all our humble efforts.

This project made us laugh, and it made us weep, but most importantly it taught us a little more of the patience of the saints. We thank the Lord that He permitted us to have the opportunity, the privilege and the joy of fulfilling a life-long dream.

Thank you everyone...
We thank the Lord for using many people to help us in our work. A big thanks goes to Terry Voss from Sonic Imprint Pro Studio who, when we didn't have a dollar to pay him, put in hours of painstaking work to record the music for us because he believed God was in it.

We thank the Lord for a kind hearted widow who bought us another computer to finish the work, and for the computer technician who gave us much more in technical support and equipment than we thought we could get.

To my friend Adrian in Wales for giving me the Scala program, I am deeply grateful. To all the people that housed us in our travels, you have helped more than you perhaps realize. A very speical thanks goes to our sister Emma and brother-in-law Manjit for allowing us to stay with them for several weeks while we were touring England. A big thanks to my friend Marios who helped so much in the setting up of our website, and to all who have prayed for us and who have encouraged us along the way.

To God be the Glory...All the gold in Rome, all the fame and glory that men can bestow, could not entice us to attempt to make a CD like this again, but the grace of God has been more than sufficient and we wouldn't want Him to have led in any other way than He has. We leave the results in His hands being sure of one thing, that His Word will not return to Him void.

We give all the honor and praise, glory and thanksgiving to the Author and Finisher of this CD. Our hearts rejoice exceedingly, our cup runneth over, Praise be the Lord, and again I say, Praise be the Lord! Amen.
